TORUS MAKING (VIDEO)

VIDEO USING ENGLISH WHEEL AND HAMMERING TO CREATE TORUS FORM

MAKING TORUS (IMAGES)

For this project, we were given the task to create an object that two curvature forms, which was the main difference with the bowl project. The torus was created by using the same aluminium sheet however was annealed for greater flexibility. Here are the process steps in making the torus.

  1. Another metal sheet was given which was cut into desired shape using the guillotine
  2. Using a (already) hand made wooden shaper, the sheet was bent around this cylindrical wood piece to create the first curvature form.
  3. Using the sharp end of the nylon mallet, the edges of the sheets were hit to indicate the shape of the curve.
  4. Once the basic outline was shown, the metal piece was then hit with the round end of the curve to stretch the metal outwards, much similar to the bowl.
  5. Using a thin cylindrical metal shaper, the outer flat edges were hit with a flat metal-head hammer to create the curvature form.
  6. Then as a final, the English wheel and the flat head hammer was used to emphasis the curve and create a contour to the torus.
Heads up to the videos in the next blog post!!!

BEAUTIFUL!

1st ATTEMPT OF MAKING A BOWL (LOST)

For the first part of the assignment, we were given the task to create a bowl shape with a metal sheet. Here were the processes in creating this bowl, even though it got stolen halfway throughout the project. (my fault for leaving at uni...)

  1. We were given a square aluminium sheet, where we drew the dimension of a circle to match the size of out bowl. (Mine was 30cm in diameter)
  2. The sheet was cut into the desired shape
  3. Another circle was drawn on the cut piece to show areas to hit
  4. Outer rim of circle was hit hard using a mallet to create puckers. This is later hit into shape to make that round bowl shape.
  5. The insides are then hit to stretch the material.
  6. These two steps are repeated until the desired shape is created.
  7. Using a flat head metal hammer and a spherical shaped object, the bowl is hit to create a smoother shape.
  8. This can also be done easier using the English wheel.

Here is me hitting the bowl with a hammer

First Attempt in making bowl. If anyone has seen or taken this bowl, please tell me. RIP my half made bowl.
